IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George
Jones
April 12, 1940 – January 4, 2026
George Jones was born April 12, 1940, in the Bronx and passed peacefully on January 4, 2026. He grew up watching Mickie Mantle patrol center field for the Yankees and Y.A. Tittle throw touchdown passes for the New York Giants and became a lifelong diehard Yankee and Giant fan.
Summering in Lake Carmel he met Margaret Burke. They were married nearly 60 yrs and had 2 children. He served his country and joined the Army after high school and was stationed in Germany while the Berlin Wall was being built. His job as a jeep driver took him all over Germany and he raved about the beer and the beauty of that country.
He had two careers, first joining his father in the lithographer trade and then after his kids were raised, educated, and on their own joined his wife at Wooster School and became the best study hall proctor in school history.
His second act allowed him to enjoy travel and adventure with his wife. They chaperoned Wooster students to Europe, explored the West Coast, and spring break in Florida. During those spring breaks, they discovered the forgotten coast of Florida and bought a place in Cape San Blas. George loved long walks on the beach and dinner parties with friends. He enjoyed gazing at the water and marveled at the sunsets with a glass of red wine.
After a Hurricane savaged the region, George and his wife relocated to Matunuck RI. For 15 years, they lived in this seaside community and George became a fixture on the porch greeting his new best friends as they walked to the beach. He was a kind and gentle man.
George is survived by his wife, Margaret; his two children, Gregory and Deborah; as well as his grandson, the apple of his eye, Greyson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date this summer and we hope you will all join us in Matunuck to celebrate a life well lived.
