George Almeida, Sr., 81, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on January 7, 2012. Born in Carolina, RI on November 4, 1930, he was the son of the late Manuel and Mary (Medeiros) Almeida. Through the years George lived in Carolina, Wyoming and Wakefield, RI as well as wintering in Venice, FL along with his beloved wife of 61 years, Beverly Jordan Almeida. He leaves a son, George Almeida Jr. and his wife Patricia Curry Almeida and a daughter, Kimberly Almeida MacDonald. Stationed at Fort Lewis, WA and Anchorage, AL between 1948 and 1950, George served his country in the US Army. He spent his early years working in the A&P, first in Shannock, then in Hope Valley, RI. In the early 1970’s he became an agent for the Nationwide Insurance Company and was able to retire in 1991 after a successful career. His many accomplishments include being a founding member of the Carolina Fire Company. George participated in his hometown government by serving as a member of the Richmond Town Council and Richmond Republican Town Committee. He was the Director of Public Welfare and on the Richmond Tax Board of Review. George also spent many years involved with the Boy Scouts of America Troop 1 Richmond. Throughout his lifetime he served on various committees and boards and was highly respected as a hard worker and an honest man. George fulfilled a lifelong dream of year round golfing, when he became a member of Myakka Pines Golf Club in Englewood, FL as well as Laurel Lane Country Club in West Kingston, RI. As an avid golfer, he got two holes in one, in the same year, at Wood River Golf Course in Hopkinton, RI. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Jacy Northup, Amy Scott, Caitlin MacDonald, Matthew Almeida-George MacDonald and Alisha MacDonald and five great grandchildren: Karissa & Dylan Northup, Madison MacDonald, Collin Shadeck, and Jordan Almeida Scott. Also surviving are three sisters, Dorothy Fenner, Viola Derusha and Theresa Dolan as well as many nieces and nephews. Brothers John, Jacquin, and Everett Almeida and Sister Irene Ralph predeceased him. Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield, RI at 10:30 am on Friday, January 13, 2012. In lieu of flowers memorial donations will be accepted at Home and Hospice Care of RI, 143 Main Street, Wakefield, RI (www.HHCRI.ORG). A reception follows immediately at the Elks.
