Gardner Sherm Sherman

March 16, 1930 — July 21, 2016

Gardner L. “Sherm” Sherman, 86, of Wakefield, passed away, Thursday July 21, 2016. He was the beloved husband of the late Mildred “Millie” (Smith) Sherman for 60 years. Born in South Kingstown on March 16, 1930, he was a son of the late Rowland L. and Elizabeth (Teft) Sherman. Mr. Sherman was the owner of Sherm’s Plumbing Company for over 30 years. He was a member of the Curtis Corner Baptist Church, the Unity Chapter # 12, the Perryville Grange # 14, and a lifetime member of Hope Lodge # 25, he served as past-president of the South County Ambulance Corp, was a past member of the Kingston Fire Dept. and the Plumbing Owners Association. He served honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Sherm was a prolific and enthusiastic gardener and he enjoyed canning a selling the vegetables he grew. He also loved cooking and made fantastic chowder and clam cakes, and he had cooked many meals for the ambulance corp., the masons, and the grange. He is survived by six daughters, Sharon Gretzula and her husband John, Bethany Curtis and her husband Andrew, Elizabeth “Betty” Rousseau and her husband Thomas, Marilyn Sherman, Emily Gioielli and her husband Stephen, and Mildred “Meme” Lathrop and her husband James; twelve grandchildren, Greg, Drew, Tammi, David, Seth, Niki, Thomas, Aaron, Anna, Emily Elena, Stephanie, and Sarah; as well as six great-grandchildren, Curtis, Cody, Paige, Kayla, Will, and Riley; three sisters, Elizabeth “Dolly” Lillibridge, Carol McGovern, and Sally RePosa. He was the brother of the late Emily Sherman Richards, Rowland “Pee Wee” Sherman, George Sherman, and Neal Sherman. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am Thursday at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are Wednesday, 4-7 pm. Gardner was helped greatly by his VNS nurse Deb and in appreciation of his care, the family would like memorial donations made to VNS, 14 Woodruff Avenue, Narragansett, RI 02882.
