Brother Brendan Foley, FSC, 87, of Christian Brothers Center, Narragansett, Rhode Island, died on Tuesday, December 18, 2018. Brother Brendan was born in Jamaica, New York on November 24, 1931 and grew up in Newport, RI. He was the son of the late William J. and Mary Foley. Brother Brendan was the twin brother of the late Edward T. Foley, and brother of Patricia A. Armstrong of Largo, Florida, Genevive (Mickey) Jackvony of Seminole, Florida, and sister-in-law to Barbara Foley of Largo, Florida. He also leaves a host of nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. He entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools after graduating from De La Salle Academy in Newport (1949). He then went to Barrytown, NY, receiving the habit of the de La Salle Christian Brothers in September of 1949. Brother Brendan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry in 1954 at Catholic University of Washington DC, and went on to earn his Masters degree in Education at New York University in 1967. Brother Brendan began his teaching career at St Patricks High School of Newburgh, NY, in 1954, moving to teach at Bishop Bradley High School in Manchester, NH in 1957. In 1961, Brother Brendan boarded a ship heading for Africa and settled at Kamwenja (a teacher training college) in Kenya. From there he went to teach math and science in Thompsons Falls (Nyahururu, Laikipia High School) in 1964. He then spent twenty years at St Pius Minor Seminary (serving as the Rector) in Musoma, Tanzania. Returning to Kenya in 1987, he taught and administered at Rongai Agricultural and Technical Secondary School, St Pauls Secondary School in Marsabit, and Mwangaza College. He also served a year as a Director of Postulants and a year as Dean of Students at Christ the Teacher College in Nairobi, Kenya. He then returned to his home province and retired at Christian Brothers Center in Narragansett, RI in 2014. Brother Brendan will be waked at Christian Brothers Center, 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett, RI on Friday, December 21, 2018 from 2:30 PM until 5:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will celebrate the life of Brother Brendan at the chapel of Our Lady of the Star at 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett, RI on Saturday at 10:30 AM. Burial will take place at Christian Brothers Cemetery following Mass. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Christian Brothers Center, 635 Ocean Rd, Narragansett, RI, 02882
