Frederick G. (“Bud”) Cooney, 84, of Windsor Locks, CT, formerly of Enfield, and also Charlestown and Providence, RI, departed this life October 22nd 2017 surrounded by family. He was the son of the late Frederick and Winifred (Buteau) Cooney of Cranston, RI. He is survived by his wife Ann (Moneta), His son Mike Cooney and daughter-in-law Jeanette of Pinedale, WY, stepdaughters Diane (Mike) Smith and Jan (Stan) Hickenbottom of Windsor Locks, stepson John Moneta of Manchester CT, brother Robert Cooney of Venice, CA and son-in-law Julio Fernandez of Ft. Lauderdale. Additionally, he leaves numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends old and new. He was predeceased by his first wife Agnes (McSweeney), his son John Cooney of Ft. Lauderdale and his sister Lois Comella of Cranston, RI. Bud was a 1951 graduate of LaSalle Academy in Providence. He retired from Electric Boat in Groton as a nuclear submarine Systems Safety Engineer. After 38 years of regular and reserve service, he also retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Coast Guard. During the Korean War, he served on Coast Guard cutters in the northern waters of the Pacific and Atlantic and rose in rank from Seaman to Radioman First Class before becoming a commissioned officer. Cooney was a Life Member of the Reserve Officers Association, past President of the Narragansett Bay Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and past officer of the American Society of Naval Engineers. He was also a past Board Member of the Charlestown, RI Historical Society, Chamber of Commerce and Senior Center. With call sign K1-RKJ, he was organizer of the Charlestown Emergency Operations Amateur Radio Team. Bud and Ann were also driving forces behind the establishment of the annual Veterans Day Parade in Charlestown. Bud had varied interests and made friends easily. He was a sometimes poet, painter and sea-story teller and an avid collector of tag sale treasures and interesting rocks. His life-long ambition was to become a cowboy “when he grew up“. He will be greatly missed. The family wishes to thank the staff and residents of Stonebrook Village in Windsor Locks for their wonderful care and valued companionship during his last year. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, October 26, 2017 from 9:30 am - 12:30pm with a service to follow in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St, Wakefield, RI, 02879. Burial with military honors will follow in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
