Florence Elizabeth (Hazard) Potter, 101, of New Milford, CT, peacefully passed away on May 14th 2024. Florence was born on August 6,1922 to Catherine (Jones) Hazard and George Page in Providence, Rhode Island. She was raised in the household of her grandfather George Jones, a former slave who had resettled in South Kingstown in the 1870s, and she attended local schools there. She was the wife of the late Alfred H. Potter Sr. of South Kingston, Rhode Island who she married in 1941. She was the loving mother of seven children, Catherine, Clinton, Sylvia, Gloria, Alfred Jr., Diane, and Timothy.
Following the footsteps of her great grandmother, nurse midwife Violet (Sands) Hazard, Florence worked many years as a nursing aide for The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. In 1987 she retired and spent her time reading, walking, and crocheting.
Florence was predeceased by her parents, brothers Herbert and William Hazard, and sister Gertrude (Hazard) Perry. She also is predeceased by her daughter, Gloria, sons Timothy, Alfred, and Clinton; granddaughter Heather Whidden; and great-grandchildren Mingo K. Whidden and Cordelia M. Whidden. She leaves to cherish her memory daughters Catherine Walmsley, Sylvia Tamakloe, Diane Moffett and son in law Jimmie, daughter-in-law Jane Potter, nine grandchildren: Terri Thomas, Clinton and Kyle Potter, Nelson and Rhoda Tamakloe, Precious Daniels, Shirley and Jasmine Potter, James Moffett, 12 great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
Visitation for Florence will be held from 12 to 1 PM on Saturday, June 8th, 2024 in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, followed by a funeral home service at 1 PM. Burial will follow in Old Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston.
