E. Jane Lucia, 97, of Charlestown passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025. She was the beloved wife of the late Vito Lucia, daughter of the late Earl and Miriam (Dubbs) Justice, sister to the late Edward Justice, and a devoted mother to three, including the late William Lucia and the late Thomas Lucia.
A lifelong caregiver, Jane gave up a prestigious piano scholarship in order to attend nursing school to care for soldiers returning from the second World War. While she never realized her dream of becoming a doctor, due to her gender, or a licensed nurse, due to circumstance, she spent the rest of her days caring for the ill, injured, newly born, and dying in her circle. She was strength and patience, compassion and healing for so many of her friends and family; a rock that lifted and supported any and everyone in need of care.
Always the independent woman, Jane was a founding member of the Chariho Business and Professional Women’s Club and a volunteer for countless organizations and local events. Jane loved playing the piano, listening to old records, dancing around the living room, and beating everyone at Scrabble. She was always quick with a joke and had a crazy story for every occasion. In 97 years of life, she lived every moment, and we were privileged to go along for the ride.
She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn J. Smith, and daughter in law, Michele Lucia, both of Charlestown, as well as 7 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and many loving relatives and friends near and far.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 24, 2025 at 10:30 am in St. Mary’s Church, 437 Carolina Back Rd, Charlestown, RI. A private burial will follow at Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Exeter.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to HopeHealth Hospice and/or Planned Parenthood.
