Evelyn H. Gates

Evelyn H. Gates, of South Kingstown, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 23, 2018, surrounded by her three loving sons. Born in Cranston on July 4, 1932, she made Wakefield her home for over sixty years. She was the wife of the late Robert B. Gates, esq. She was the daughter of the late Waldo and Tina (McKean) Holman. She was the sister of the late Arthur Holman, Margaret Eversol and Pierce Holman. Evelyn is survived by her three sons, Robert B. Gates, Jr., Peter H. Gates and John M. Gates; daughters in law Jane Gates, Lillian Gates and Johns companion, Suzanne Wright. Evelyn leaves seven grandchildren, Cory, Emily, Georgia, Merrill, Max, Jessica Kalogeras, Rebecca Kalogeras and a great grandson, Julius Wilson. After graduating from URI, Evelyn worked in Chicago for a time before returning to Wakefield and marrying Robert Gates, her husband of 61 years. She was a loving mother and wife. Evelyn was involved in Cub Scouts, her church and volunteer work. For many years she volunteered for the South County Hospital Auxiliary, receiving various awards and then becoming president. Evelyn also volunteered for the S.K. Lions Club South County Heritage Festival. Her interests included reading, gardening and sailing the waters of New England with her beloved husband Bob and friends. Rest in Peace Mom, we love you. All are welcome to attend a memorial service at Peace Dale Congregational Church, 261 Columbia St., Peace Dale, RI, on Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at 5 pm. Burial will be private.
