Evelina Virginia Miller, age 85, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026. Virginia was a woman of faith with a kind soul, a woman with an open heart, a warm smile, and an infectious laugh.
She was born in Berkley County, South Carolina, later making her home in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. Her family was the center of her universe. She was the devoted wife of her husband Eddie, known to most as Fletcher, and loving mother to three daughters. She worked at the Ladd Center for a number of years, caring for those less fortunate. As the blessing of grandchildren came into her life, she would plant a tree in her yard for each of them. Virginia loved her garden and was happy when her hands were in the earth, planting bulbs and flowers. She also loved gospel music. At one time she attended a choir concert that she said would feed her soul for years to come. She was a member of the Community Church of God in South Kingstown, Rhode Island.
There was nobody who could make a sweet potato pie like Virginia Miller and she made a lot of them for family and friends. Those of us who were at family gatherings, cookouts, and barbeques will remember her resounding voice as she thanked her heavenly Father for not just the food, but for all the gifts given to us. We will sorely miss her uplifting prayers of gratitude.
She is survived by her daughters Rolanda Mazyck, and LaTanya Miller, as well as her grandchildren, LaKiesha Stromley (Eric Steinberg), Dominique Stromley, Ty Stromley (Jenna), Kristy (Shawn), Mahlik Handley (Grace), Terell Handley(Sophia), Tremayne and Jhanai Handley, and Xavier Hazard. She was blessed with great children: Jameson James, Naomi Evalina (namesake), Ivy Lee, Myles James, Lucia Bridget, and Zavian Eric. She is also survived by her siblings Carrie (Henry) Bowman of Philadelphia, PA and Ernest (Annie) Mazyck and Samuel (Ruby) Mazyck of Columbia, SC.
She was predeceased by her parents Herbert and Rebecca (Ferguson) Mazyck, as well as her husband Eddie James Miller and their daughter Bridget Lee Handley (Jeremy), and her stepson Shawn Hazard. She is also predeceased in death by her siblings, Raymond (Orilee) Mazyck and Joseph (Ira Mae) of Charleston, SC; Rosa (Saul) Ferguson of Columbia, SC; Lucille (Earnest "Son") Taste of Eutawville, SC and Bessie (Mazyck) Wright (David) of Bronx, NY.
Visitation hours will be held on Wednesday, February 4th from 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM at Avery Storti Funeral Home, Wakefield, RI. The funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM followed by a burial procession to New Fernwood Cemetery in Kingstown, Rhode Island
