Ethel I. Pettis, 88, a lifelong resident of Snug Harbor, died Sunday, November 27th. She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 61 years, James S. Pettis.
Born in Exeter, she was the daughter of Thomas Franklin Tefft and Marie (Pelletier) Tefft.
Ethel worked at many local landmarks in her younger years, including both Kenyon’s and Fleming’s Dept Stores in Wakefield, and Vale’s Variety in Snug Harbor. She then became a CNA, serving South County residents until her late 70’s. She was a long-time member of Curtis Corner Baptist Church. Ethel resided at Apple Rehab Clipper since 2021.
She is survived by her two children, Laurie A. Gill of Charlestown and James S. Pettis of North Port, FL; three grandchildren, Jaime E. Gill of Charlestown, Colleen M. Binder of Long Valley, NJ, and Tyler E. Gill of North Stonington, CT; three great-grandchildren; and her sister Stella LaPointe of Coventry. She is predeceased by eight siblings: Doris Ruskin, Jim Smith, Marguerite “Peach” Remington, Gilbert Tefft, Alfred “Bud” Tefft, Owen Tefft, Jean Mancinho, and Lewell Tefft.
Calling hours will be held 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 6th and 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 7 at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street in Wakefield. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, December 7th in the funeral home. Burial will follow at Maple Root Cemetery in Coventry.
Ethel will be remembered for her generosity and giving spirit by all who knew her.
