Ethel Mae Wilcox Brown

Ethel Mae (Wilcox) Brown, 96, of Charlestown died Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at home surrounded by her family. She was the eldest member of the Narragansett Indian Tribe. Morningstar, as she was known amongst her people, was very instrumental in gaining federal recognition for the Tribe. She was predeceased by her parents, George E. Wilcox Sr. and Olive May (Jackson) Wilcox; her younger brothers, George Wilcox Jr., William "Big Toe" Wilcox, and Robert E. Wilcox. She was the widow of two time Boston Marathon winner, Ellison M. "Tarzan" Brown Sr.; they had four children, two sons, Ellison M. "Sonny" Brown Jr. of Charlestown and Norman E. "Thunderbolt" Brown Sr. of Hope Valley; two daughters, the late Ethel "Sis" Brown and the late Marlene (Brown) Monroe. She also leaves 10 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by 3 grandsons and is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 22, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Narragansett Indian Tribes Longhouse, Charlestown. Burial will be private.
