Esther M. Greene

Esther Miner Greene, 94, wife of the late Oliver Watson Greene, died peacefully Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the South County Hospital, Wakefield, R.I. She was a kind, gentle, and loving woman. Born in New London, CT. to the late Arthur Courtland and Anna Chapman Miner, she grew up in the Groton, CT. area, where she became a dental hygienist. After she was married in 1941, she moved to Wakefield, Rhode Island where she became a busy mother, homemaker and church member. Esther and her husband built and lived in 9 homes the Wakefield area of Rhode Island with a brief few years in 2 homes in New Hampshire. She delighted in raising their two sons and supporting her husband as he developed the Greene Plastics Company and the Quo Vadis Shopping Center. She enjoyed baking, playing bridge her Madhatters Women’s Club, doing needlework, bowling and her dear Wakefield Baptist Church. Esther was devoted to her family, friends, and her church. She was especially proud of the accomplishments of her grandsons—Todd, Nathan and Andrew. Esther was the last surviving child of eight (her elder sister, Dorothy, recently died at age 95). She is survived by two sons and daughter–in- laws, Tom and Sharon Greene of Ridgefield, CT. , Peter and Liz Greene of Narragansett, R.I., and grandchildren, LTC Todd Greene and his wife Devon of Annapolis, MD., Nathan Greene and his wife Bethany of Warren, R.I, and Andrew Greene of Leicester, MA. She was predeceased by four brothers, George, Kenneth, Courtland, and Charles; and three sisters, Dorothy Mc Kinney, Ann Miner and Grace Priscilla Sawyer. There will be no calling hours. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at the Wakefield Baptist Church at 1 pm, Saturday, February 12. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Esther’s memory to the Esther Greene Memorial Fund at the Wakefield Baptist Church, 236 Main Street, Wakefield, R.I. 02879.
