Elizabeth Ann (Betty Ann) (Farrell) Hogan, 90, of Wakefield, passed away in the early morning of April 18th after being peacefully surrounded by her family for several days. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas S. Hogan, Esquire. Betty Ann was born in Providence, R.I. on September 27, 1927 and was the daughter of the late Dr. Charles Laurence Farrell and Mary Ann (Murphy) Farrell, the sister of the late Patricia F. Zeiser of Wakefield, R.I. and the late Charles L. Farrell, Jr. of Cobbs Creek, VA. Betty Ann and Tom had eight children, all of whom survived her: Elizabeth A. Hogan of Narragansett, RI, Thomas S. Hogan, Jr., (Alma) Wakefield, RI, Dr. Patricia M. Hogan, (Michael Brandon) of Waterford, CT, Col. William H. Hogan, USA, (Ret.) (Karen) of Tampa, FL, Margaret L. Hogan, (Robert Falvey) of Charlestown, RI, Charles J. Hogan, (Tricia) of Cambridge, VT, Richard E. Hogan, (Karen) of Narragansett, RI, and Mary C. Levesque, (Todd) of Stafford Springs, CT. Betty Ann was blessed with 16 grandchildren: Jennifer L. Buchanan, Marianne L. Myers, Maureen E. Hogan, Carolyn E. Daigle, Sean W. Hogan, James C. Hogan, Richard P. Hogan, Stephanie E. Novotny, Joshua S. Hogan, Grace A. Falvey, William T. Hogan, Jason T. Hogan, Aidan T. Falvey, Cody P. Levesque, Angel Mumford, and Andrew K. Levesque. Her great grandchildren are Vivian M. Buchanan, Thomas M. Hogan, Henry C. Buchanan, David B. Daigle and Raegan K. Hogan She was a graduate of Pawtucket West High School, Pawtucket, RI, the College of New Rochelle, New Rochelle, NY, and the Katharine Gibbs School, Providence. In her early career, she was employed by the G. H. Walker Co., Providence, RI. Then, she took time off from her career to raise her large family. When her youngest went off to first grade in 1971, Betty Ann became the Secretary and later, Office Administrator, of Kingston Congregational Church, Kingston, RI, retiring in May,1998. In her youth, Betty Ann enjoyed horseback riding, swimming, diving and figure skating. She was a runner up, with her sister, Patsy, in New England Girls Pairs figure skating, was a finalist in Eastern States Dance and held a silver medal from the Providence Figure Skating Club where she was also a Charter member. Betty Ann was also a member of the United States Figure Skating Association, the Lake Placid Club Snow Birds, Lake Placid, New York and the Pawtucket Community Players. Betty Ann was an active and devoted member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Wakefield, where she was a soprano member of the choir for more than 40 years and served in many capacities in the St. Francis Womens Club, including a stint as President. She was a Parish Council member, Catholic Charities volunteer, baked for any and every event requested, worked at all the rummage sales, served as a money counter on Monday mornings, assisted at the monthly Scallop Shell nursing home Mass, and countless other activities in her fifty-six years in the Parish. In addition to raising her large family and hosting five Spanish Heritage Association exchange students, Betty Ann engaged in many civic and charitable activities, notably a Cub Scout den mother for many years. She served her alma mater, the College of New Rochelle, as the President and Treasurer of the Providence Plantations Alumnae chapter. Betty Ann was a devoted volunteer with the South County Hospital Auxiliary and served as corresponding secretary and recording secretary. She was a fixture in the coffee shop for more than 20 years, worked the Patient Information Desk, the baby-photo division, and gift cart. She further served as an Escort, and Chaplains Assistant, and in 2007 was named Volunteer of the Year with more than 5,000 volunteer hours. In the course of her adult life in South County she was a member of The Dunes Club, The Galilee Beach Club, the U. S. Power Squadron, the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Pt. Judith Yacht Club, Smelt Brook Yacht Club, the South County Jr. Women's Club, the Woman's Club of South County, and was a Prout Mother's Club Board member. Most recently, she was a member of the "Serenaders" singing group at Brookdale South Bay where she resided. Betty Ann and her husband enjoyed travel, boating and photography together. She was a talented seamstress and a prolific knitter, and in her later years, she enjoyed painting on fabric and glass. Her family invites you to celebrate her life with a wake on Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 4:00PM -7:00PM at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 23, 2018 at 10:00AM at St. Francis of Assisi in High Street, Wakefield, followed by burial in St Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale, R.I. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank all her devoted caregivers at the Scallop Shell and Brookdale South Bay. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Animal Rescue Rhode Island, PO Box 458, Wakefield, RI 02880, or St. Judes Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 would be appreciated.
