Edward C. Hayes, III, 76, of Wakefield, passed away on December 28, 2018. He was the husband of Linda (McLellan) Hayes. Born in South Kingstown, he was son of the late Edward C. Hayes, II and Dorothy (Simms) Hayes. Edward attended LaSalle Academy. After graduation he earned both his PhD and MS in Microbiology/Biochemistry at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. He attained a BS in Biology/Chemistry/Mathematics at Providence College in Rhode Island. Edward was a Bio Chemist at Merck Research Laboratories for 25 years. Prior to then he was Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology & Immunology and the Department of Pediatrics at Duke University; Assistant Professor in the Microbiology Department at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, NC; and an Instructor in the Department of Microbiology at Rutgers University. In his spare time, he enjoyed boating, fishing, working in his yard, gardening, doing crossword puzzles with his wife, helping on his sons farm, and working on steam engines. Besides his wife he is survived by his children Edward Hayes and his wife Michelle, Sean Hayes and his wife Sheila, Keith Hayes, and Christina Kozloff; grandchildren Sarah Hayes, Patricia Hayes, Edward Hayes, Nicholas Londowski, Ross Hayes, Tessa Peterson, and Piper Peterson. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, January 4, 2019 from 10am - 11am followed by a funeral service at 11 am in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield.
