Edward J. Carney, PhD., 82 of Westerly, died Monday May 16. He was the beloved husband of the late Mary Ann (Link) Carney. Born in Rochester, NY he was a son of the late Harry Amos and Mabel (Wright) Smith. He was a graduate of the University of Rochester in 1951, earning his Bachelor’s degree of Science and received his Doctorate from Iowa State in 1967. Dr. Carney then came to the University of Rhode Island as a Professor of Statistics, teaching there until 1995. He served as a Lieutenant JG in the US Navy during the Korean Conflict, earning several medals. He was an active member of the Kingston Congregational Church. Surviving are five children; Ann L. Ohlin of Portland, ME, Stephen J. Carney of Narragansett, David E. Carney of Knoxville, TN, Jane E. Bentley of Charlestown, and Marguerite L. Carney of Perth, Australia; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. A memorial service will be held Wednesday June 1, 2011 at 11 AM at the Kingston Congregational Church, Kingston. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. Memorial donations may be made to the Kingston Congregational Church, 2610 Kingstown Road, Kingston, RI 02881. Burial will be private.
