Edward J. Barry, Jr.

Edward J. Barry, Jr., 89, beloved husband of Cynthia Mello Barry, died peacefully at his home in Charlestown, RI on March 22, 2017 after a long illness. Ed was born in West Haven, CT on March 22, 1928, to the late Edward and Viola Barry. After serving in the US Army, Ed graduated from Brown University in 1952. He was an executive with AT&T for 25 years before returning to Brown to work in the Athletics department. He was inducted into the Brown Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. Ed was the essence of "Ever True". Ed was a tireless volunteer throughout his life. He coached Little League and was president of the PTA when his children were young and later devoted his time to a variety of organizations including Meals on Wheels, South County Hospital and to counseling others on alcohol abuse and recovery. He was the Executive Director of the Galilee Mission, an alcohol and drug treatment center in Narragansett for several years, retiring at the age of 80. Ed had been a friend of Bill W.s for over 40 years at the time of his death. Ed was a lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants attending games in New York and later in San Francisco. He loved the beaches in Rhode Island and the Caribbean and most recently enjoyed visits to Kennebunkport, ME where he appreciated great food and shopping. When at home, Ed enjoyed lunches and afternoons on the deck with his dog, Charlie and a good cigar. Ed is survived by his wife Cynthia, his children, Kathleen Barry and her husband John Magladery, Ted Barry, Julia Barry, his stepdaughter Kate ONeil and three grandchildren. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 29, at St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 15 East Beach Road, Charlestown, RI. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Edward J.
