Edna Allen, 95, passed away Friday April 16, after a brief illness. Originally from Washington State, she had resided with her daughter, Coretta Ford in Sarasota, FL for several years. Last June she moved to Brightview Commons, South Kingstown, RI, to be near her daughter, Shirlee Rosenthal, who lives in Wakefield, and her family. She loved living at Brightview, her independence, new friends and the activities. Besides her daughters, she is survived by six grandchildren, Judy Richardson, Jody Hall, Joyce Rosenthal, Jill McLoughlin, Kellie Pinkowsky, Marc Mighell; nine great grandchildren; and a sister Beryl Parker and her family in California. She was married to the late Herbert Allen for 54 years. Her late father Charles VanWormer and her husband were career military, and she was fervently patriotic her entire life. Mrs. Allen was among the many women who went to work to cover jobs for the service people who went overseas to fight during World War II. She loved flowers and always had beautiful gardens wherever she lived, especially in Friday Harbor in the San Juan Islands, off the coast of Washington and British Columbia, where she and her husband retired. A private family memorial service will be held in River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, RI.
