Edgar J. Cormier

April 18, 1917 — April 12, 2016

Edgar Joseph Cormier, age 98, of Peace Dale died peacefully at home on April 12, 2016. Loving husband for 72 years of the late Marie Rita Cormier, son of Joseph A. and Leona (Cyr) Cormier, father of nine, grandfather of 16, ‘Pepere’ was also great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather of many more. Born and raised in Lille, Maine, Edgar worked first for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) before joining the Army Air Corps in 1943. Married in 1942 at St. Francis of Assisi church in Wakefield, he has been a faithful member of that congregation for the past 35 years. Settling in Peace Dale originally, Edgar worked for the University of Rhode Island in agriculture. Moving to New Jersey in 1955, Edgar made a second career working for Hoffman-La Roche Pharmaceuticals while raising a family. Edgar enjoyed many facets of life and living, visiting each of the continental 48 states with Rita, and many states with their children as they grew. The importance of family life had always been a strength to Edgar, a characteristic that he passed on to their own children. Grandchildren and their own growing families had always been a joy to Edgar, and he was never without a toy to share with them. Edgar went with Rita to the local Senior Center in Wakefield for many years. They eventually added volunteer work there, and were written up in several newspaper articles citing their pleasant nature and interest in helping others while at the center. He had also been a long time member of the Richmond Grange and the American Legion. Edgar is survived by two sisters, Lucille Parent and Sr. Berthe Cormier, and his nine children: Laurette Vible, Yvette Doyle, Georgette Breslin, Edgar Cormier Jr., Don (nee Armand) Cormier and wife Connie, Nancy Bibby and husband Tom, James Cormier and wife Dorothy, Mary Ellen Card and husband Danny, and David Cormier and wife Diane, respectively by age. The family extends their thanks to the kind workers at the Hope Home and Hospice Care service, each of whom made Edgar’s final days more comfortable with their compassionate and professional help at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, April 22nd at 10 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Burial with full military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
