E. Francis “Fran” McGovern, 89, of Narragansett passed away Tuesday, October 3, 2017. He was the husband of Carol Alice (Sherman) McGovern for 68 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John F. and Mary Hellen (Dalton-Harvey) McGovern. Mr. McGovern was the founding owner of McGovern Landscaping Inc. for 70 years. He worked for South County Hospital and the Narragansett Medical Building for over 15 years. Mr. McGovern was a US Army WWII veteran who served with the 1st Calvary Division in the Pacific as part of the Allied Occupational Army in Japan. Upon his return, he served as Distribution Manager for the Department of the Navy at Quonset Point for 26 years. He was a Past President of Local 3034 and Teamsters AFL-CIO for Quonset Point. He was active in the community throughout his life. Mr. McGovern was one of the founders of Narragansett Youth Basketball which he coached for many years. He served on the St Thomas More Church Council and ran the church’s Youth Canteen. For his civic service to the Town of Narragansett he was inducted in the Order of the Knights of the Rockingham Arch. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children David J. McGovern, Deputy Chief, Charlestown Fire Department, Captain (Ret) William F. McGovern Narragansett Police Department, LTC (Ret) Joanne E. McGovern, US Army, the late Carol Anne McGovern, and seven grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at 10 am in St. Thomas More Church, 53 Rockland St., Narragansett, Burial will follow in St Francis Cemetery, Peace Dale. Visiting hours will be on Monday, October 9, 2017, from 4-7pm in Avery -Storti Funeral Home, 88 Colombia St, Wakefield.
