Douglas Alan Smith, 61, of Wakefield, passed away Wednesday July 6, 2016. Born in Boothbay Harbor Maine. He was the son of Irene Reicker Smith and the late Pastor Donald F. Smith. He spent his entire career as custodian with the Narragansett school system. He loved the kids and was known by thousands as an encourager in over 40 years of service. He spent years of volunteer service to Narragansett Baptist Church in various capacities. For years he organized the annual Sunrise Breakfast, always making sure everyone was served. Doug spent years of service as a volunteer Narragansett fireman until he retired. Doug was a “Mainer” and proud of it, spending time there with family and friends hunting, fishing, picking blueberries and telling stories with his sharp whit. Doug was known as a kind, generous, humorous and encouraging man to everyone he met. He loved clamming, sailing his little boat and supporting nieces at every type of game, show or event. He loved woodworking and restoring old military vehicles with his best friend Paul Forbes. He is survived by his mother Irene Smith, of Wakefield, brothers Herbert Smith, wife Kathy, children Elizabeth and Andrew, of Costa Mesa, CA, Jonathan Smith, wife Kathy, children Ann, Deborah, Rebekah and Allison of South Kingstown; great nieces and nephews and surrogate adopted uncle to many others. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday July 12, from 4 to 7p.m. at Avery-Storti Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Narragansett, Kingstown Road, Narragansett. In lieu of flowers, honorariums may be made to any charity of your choice in memory of Douglas.
