Douglas M. Rosie, Ph.D. passed away peacefully on Friday, August 2, 2013, at his home in Narragansett, Rhode Island. He was born on March 6, 1928 in Cranston, the son of the late Forrest and Edith Rosie. He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia (Camardo) Rosie. They recently celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. After serving in the army from 1946 to 1948, Douglas earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Rhode Island in 1951. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1955, after which he joined Esso Research and Engineering as a Research Chemist. He was recruited back to URI’s Chemistry Department in 1958. He served as faculty member and department chair. He published several juried research articles in prestigious journals, including Analytical Chemistry, Clinical Chemistry and the Journal of Chromatography. He was advisor and mentor to many M.S. and Ph.D. students. He served as Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. He also served as Associate Provost at the University, a position he retired from in 1992. In 2012, he received the Dean’s List Award from URI’s College of Arts and Sciences in recognition of his many years of valuable service to the University. Dr. Rosie enjoyed his family and friends, “playing golf” and spending time at his homes in Bonita Springs, Florida and in Narragansett. He was a wonderful storyteller and had an infectious laugh, which brought smiles to the faces of those around him. The Rosies were known for opening their homes and hearts to their many friends. Doug’s love of singing, accompanied on the piano by his wife Virginia, was a highlight of every festive occasion. He was never happier than when surrounded by Virginia and the many who loved him. Dr. Rosie is also survived by nieces Christine Beneby (Doyle) of San Antonio, Texas and Janet Rosie of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and nephew Donald G. Rosie (Raeleen) of Lake Stevens, Washington. He was also the brother of the late Donald P. Rosie. Visitation will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. Burial will be private.
