Dorothy K. Smith, 95, of Narragansett, died Friday. She was the wife of the late Arthur W. “Pete Smith. Born in Warwick, she was a daughter of the late Ralph W. and Abigail (Reid) Keyes. She graduated from Lockwood High School in 1936 and attended Rhode Island College in Kingston (now URI). During WW II, she worked for the local Office of Price Administration (OPA) rationing board in Warwick After the war she worked for the American Red Cross, Warwick Chapter, until her marriage in 1947, and settled in the South County Area. While residing in South County, Mrs. Smith was employed for the Narragansett Public Health Nurse Association and served on its board, the Coca Cola Bottling Company in Peace Dale, and the Wilson Publishing Company (Narragansett Times) for 25 years. She was elected to the Narragansett School Committee in the 1960’s, served as president of the Narragansett PTA, and as president of the Narragansett Senior Citizen’s Association. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Peace Dale Congregational Church, and played in the Handbell Choir for 14 years, the Nestell Chapter # 6, Order of Eastern Star, Seniors Helping Others, the 1918 Club International & Editor of the 1918 Club Bulletin for 14 years, and THE CLUB. Mrs. Smith authored the book “Tragedies of the Sea- Boats and Men of the Point Judith Fleet”. She is survived by a son, Richard A. Smith and his wife Joyce of North Kingstown; and two grandchildren, Abigail H. Smith and Alexander A. Smith, both of North Kingstown. She was the mother of the late Browning K. Smith and Peter W. Smith. A memorial service will be held at 11 am Tuesday, June 24, 2014 in the Peace Dale Congregational Church, 261 Columbia Street, Peace Dale. Burial will be private and visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to The Galilee Mission to Fisherman, Inc., PO Box 459, Narragansett, RI 02882.
