Dorothy A. Kraines

December 10, 1928 — September 30, 2023

Dorothy “Dot” Agnes (Quanstrom) Kraines, 94, peacefully passed away on September 30th having spent her final days constantly visited by her loving family at the Hope Health Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence. Her husband of 53 years, Robert “Bob” Kraines, passed away in 2003 and her family is confident that they are now both in the presence of Jesus.

Dorothy was born in 1928 in Providence, RI, daughter of the late Carl and Agnes “Betty” Quanstrom. Dot trained as a nurse at the Boston Children’s Hospital and worked there for a time after graduation. She and Bob moved to Narragansett, Rhode Island, in the fifties and she managed the home and kept the books for Bob, a commercial fisherman. Dot and Bob raised six children together and fostered a few more. For many of those years Dot exercised an outsized gift of hospitality to so many, both in her home and through many a hot meal delivered to church (and other) folk in need. She masterfully played piano for worship services at First Baptist Narragansett, as well as faithfully staffed the nursery there. Her home warmly welcomed legions of visitors - especially for the famous Fourth of July clambakes held for so many years where guests enjoyed plentiful fresh seafood in the shadow of her well-tended gardens. Her life was a testimony to the grace of Jesus she so adored.

Dorothy is survived by her six children: Richard (Ricki) Kraines, Karen Smith, Jeffrey (Kathy) Kraines, Russell (Diane) Kraines, Donald (Michelle) Kraines, and Mark (Kelley) Kraines. She loved and prayed for her 20 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. Her daughter Karen faithfully did so much for the day to day support of her Mom for the last twenty years, and Dot’s granddaughter, Samantha Thursby, formed a wonderful bond in Dot’s later years as she delivered tender personal care to her Grandma.

Dot was the 3rd of 5 children. She’s survived by her younger sister, Patricia Brearley. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her brother Edward Quanstrom, and sisters, Sis Pickett and Betty Mongeon and grandson, Peter Kraines.
