Dorothy Mary Greene

Dorothy M. Greene, 88, died at Halcyon West Bay on Wednesday, January 5th. She was the daughter of the late Francis “Frank” E. Greene and Ella M. (Williams) Greene. Born in Pawtucket, Dorothy was a 1949 graduate of St. Francis Xavier Academy in Providence. After graduation, she entered the Sisters of Mercy where, as Sister Mary Damien, R.S.M., she taught for 20 years, first in Catholic elementary schools in Cranston and Newport, and later as a teacher of English at Salve Regina University, Newport. After receiving her Ph.D. in English literature from St. John’s University in New York in 1972, Dorothy became Professor of English at Community College of RI. She also authored two books, Preview of Heaven and Loving Woman of Faith. In retirement, Dorothy organized several local book clubs and cared for her mother until her death in 2005. Dorothy is survived by her sister Joyce (Edward) Ging of Pittsburgh, PA and Boca Raton, FL and her brother David (Sheila) Greene of Warwick. Dorothy was predeceased by her brother John “Jack” Greene and his wife Virginia. Dorothy is survived by many nieces and nephews and devoted friend Cynthia Field which whom she made her home for many years. A memorial service for Dorothy will be held at a later date.
