Doris Edwards Stedman

Doris Edwards Stedman, 100, died Wednesday at South County Hospital. She has been a resident of Wakefield since the late 1930’s when she arrived to care for the children of the Hazard-Robinson family. She was the wife of the late William Herbert Stedman. Born in Hughsonville, NY, the daughter of the late Glenn and Essie (Sherman) Edwards. She resided on Kenyon Avenue for 68 years in the same house built when Carpenter’s Union 810, of which her husband was an officer, held an old-fashioned house raising covered in the local newspaper Doris was a graduate of State University of New York of Cobbleskill and the University of Rhode Island. She was an elementary teacher in the North Kingstown Schools for 20 years. Doris was a member of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church and its women’s auxiliary. She was also a member of the Indian Run Garden Club and Fayerweather Crafts Guild. She enjoyed bowling, golfing, and gardening. She was a member of Seniors Helping Others and donated many handicrafts to charitable organizations and hospitals. She leaves a son David (Cindy) Stedman of Hoover, AL, and three daughters, Roxanna Pertuniak of Peoria AZ; Pamela Dee of Attleboro, MA; Carol (John) Puddicombe of Gulf Shores, AL. She also leaves two sisters, Rhea Pomaski of Old Saybrook, CT; and Coral Hacker of Dunedin, FL. She was the sister of the late Leila VanRavensway and Anita Holmes. She also leaves seven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Tuesday, June 13, 2017 at 10:30 am in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield. Visiting hours will be held Monday, from 5-7pm in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St, Wakefield.
