Donald D. Allen, beloved husband and father, passed away on February 20th at the age of 89, after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Trudell) Allen, for 60 years. He was born in South Kingstown, and was a son of the late Gideon and Gladys (Pearson) Allen. Don was a hard working self proclaimed “Swamp Yankee” whose greatest passion was his family. At the age of 17, immediately after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Navy to fight in World War II, where he was educated as an electrician. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he made a living in the electrical, plumbing and heating industry. A “Jack of all trades,” he used his skills to help out family and friends on countless occasions without expecting anything in return. In his leisure time, he was an avid gardener, history buff and loved to read and learn about a variety of subjects; there was always a book nearby. He enjoyed vacationing to historical sites. Besides his wife he is survived by two daughters, Linda Allen of Peace Dale and Sandra Allen of Holden, MA; a sister, Carolyn Richards of Wakefield; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Gideon Allen, Jr., Joseph Allen, Richard Allen, Evelyn Ballinger, Mary Boucher, and Eleanor Chappell. A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am Monday in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. Burial with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter. Visiting hours are Sunday, 3-5 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to American Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 135 Parkinson Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10305, the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018, or the National Audubon Society, 225 Varick Street, 7th Floor, New York, NY 10014.
