Dennis J. O’Brien, 78, of Narragansett, passed away May 18th surrounded by his loving family. Born in Concord, NH to his loving parents, the late John and Teresa (DeBiase) O’Brien. Dennis was the beloved husband of Jane (Rush) O’Brien for 52 years.
Dennis spent his younger years in Providence and moved back to Warwick in 1954. He attended Warwick Schools and graduated from Bishop Hendricken High School, class of 1963. He attended Park College in Illinois and Roger Williams College and obtained his Criminal Justice degree. He was in the Marine Corps Reserves from 1966 to 1972. He joined the Narragansett Police Department in 1970 and attained the rank of Captain, retiring in 1996. He joined the United States Marshals Service as a Court Security Officer until 2003 and then worked for the Narragansett School System as an Attendance Officer. After full retirement in 2007 Dennis and Jane enjoyed winters in Naples, Florida and more recently The Villages, Florida. Dennis enjoyed playing guitar and entertained many sing-a-longs with family and friends. He enjoyed boating with his family on Narrow River in Narragansett and playing golf with his friends. Dennis was a member of the Commissioned Police Officers Association of RI, South Kingstown Elks, Bonnet Shores Beach Club and The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.
Besides his wife, Dennis is survived by his children, Douglas K. O’Brien, Det.Sgt. SKPD (Jennifer), Christine M. Phelan (Todd), Kevin J. O’Brien (Donna), Patrick W. O’Brien,Sgt. NPD; his sister, Carole A. O’Brien-White and was the loving grandfather of Sean V. O’Brien, Megan L. O’Brien, Shannon M. O’Brien, Caitlyn J. O’Brien and Nathan Rzemien.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, May 23rd from 4-7 pm in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield 02879. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, on Wednesday, May 24th at 10:30 am in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd, Kingston, 02881. Burial with military honors will follow in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 S County Trail, Exeter, 02822.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to South County Health Cancer Center, 100 Kenyon Avenue,Wakefield, RI 02879.
