Dennis Edward Hughes of Narragansett, August 26, 2017 at the age of 97 passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family. Dennis was born February 21, 1920 at home in Warwick, RI to John and Margaret (McCarthy) Hughes, the fourth of eleven children. He was the husband of the late Anna (Ruselvitz) Hughes for 56 years. Father of Ann Maguire of Charlestown, Denise Eaton of Narragansett and Dennis (Rusty) Hughes and his wife September Hughes of Narragansett. Grandfather to Melissa Maguire, Amy Kalif, Ryan Maguire, Jennifer Eaton, Curtis Eaton III, Wyatt Maguire and his wife Chantel Maguire, Arianna Hughes, and Callum Hughes. Great-grandfather to Dalilah Eaton, Emma Kalif, Alfino Davis, Samuel Kalif, Aidan Maguire-Sojka, Chase Maguire and baby Hughes Maguire. Brother of Anna Needham, Thomas Hughes and Rose Dwyer and the late Margaret Allen, John Hughes, Bill Hughes, Richard Hughes, Ellen Goff, Michael (Joe) Hughes, and Mary Dorwacker. In 1942 Dennis enlisted into the Air Corps. He was a member of 312th Bombardment Group of the USAAF, stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Dennis studied electronics at New England Tech for 2 years and then worked as an instruments mechanic for Quonset Point Navy Base for 28 years. After retiring from Quonset, Dennis was a school bus driver for Narragansett School Department for 10 years Dennis was the original MacGyver who could always find a way to fix anything. He enjoyed painting, spending time with his family, and watching the Patriots and Red Sox play. A truly great man, Dennis was respected, revered and loved by his entire family and friends. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary Star of the Sea Church, Pt. Judith Rd., Narragansett. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-7 p.m. in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield.
