Deborah J. Kelso, an unrivaled hostess and beloved community member, passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at her home in Wakefield surrounded by family. She was 67. Born in Warwick on December 11, 1956, Deborah was known for her quick wit, honesty, and dedication to making her local community a better place. She touched the lives of many through her work and her kind heart.
Deborah graduated from the University of Rhode Island with a degree in Journalism, a field that allowed her to use her voice to amplify important causes and share stories that needed to be heard. She spent the majority of her career as the managing partner of the Coast Guard House Restaurant and then took on the role of the Director of the Narragansett Chamber of Commerce. Deborah most recently served on the South Kingstown Town Council for two terms, where she fought for the betterment of her community. Her passion for giving back extended beyond her professional life. Deborah was a proud member of the Narragansett Lions Club for many years where she found joy in serving others and making a positive impact on the world around her. She was also an elected representative on the RI Democratic Committee. Her dedication to social justice and civics was unwavering, and she always chose to stand up for what she believed in. Deborah’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Rep. James M. Kelso, her brother, Wilton Gray, and her sister, Judy Emrick (Corky). She is survived by her loving family: children, Carrie Kelly (Zachary Saul), Erica Breault (David), and Andrew Jennings, her grandchildren: Ava Mongillo, and Brooks Saul, and her best friend, Toni Owens (Andy). Deborah is also survived by four siblings Susan Salisbury (Lee), Dottie Santagata, Steven Gray (Maureen), and Robert Gray, as well as her many nieces and nephews.
At Deborah’s request, in lieu of services, the family has donated to The Jonnycake Center, a cause near and dear to Deborah’s heart. Memorial contributions can be made to South County Hospital Cancer Center, where Deborah received care during her illness. Deborah’s legacy of compassion and advocacy will live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know her. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for the light she brought into the world.
