David R. Sheldon

June 10, 1952 — March 17, 2010

David R. Sheldon, 57, of Kingston, died unexpectedly Wednesday at South County Hospital. He was the beloved and devoted husband of Debbie (Oakley) Sheldon. A descendent of the Mayflower, David was a thirteenth generation South Kingstown resident and the son of the late Foster R. Sheldon, former South Kingstown Town Clerk and Mildred (Schmidt) Sheldon. He was a graduate of South Kingstown High School, received a BS in Geology from Colgate University, a BS in Civil Engineering from Roger Williams University and his Masters from U.R.I. He was a Civil Engineer for DEM, DOT and DOA for thirty years before retiring. He was currently working for Thielsch Engineering in Cranston. David was also an Adjunct Professor at CCRI and Roger Williams University and a professional land surveyor. Dave was very active in South County Sports. He coached South County Youth Soccer, Basketball and Baseball and was named coach of the year. He was very patriotic and enjoyed the outdoors, especially Narragansett Beach. Dave was passionate about his music, playing guitar in two local bands The Coola-Heads and King Huey. He was a member of Christ the King Church and played in the church choir. He was the loving father of Kayla, Matthew and Daniel Sheldon and cousin of Carolyn Curtis. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00 AM in Christ the King Church, 180 Old North Rd., Kingston. Visiting hours Sunday 3-7 PM in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to South County Youth Soccer, 50 High St., Wakefield, RI 02879.
