David Andrew McKendry, 73 of Narragansett, passed peacefully at his home on Harbour Island with his wife, Trudy, beside him, after a ten year battle with Multiple Myeloma. Born in Providence, RI to James R. McKendry and Phyllis L. (Edmond) McKendry, David attended Hope High School in Providence. He was an avid hockey fan and played for the Hope High School Hockey Team. He graduated from Hope in 1959, enlisted in the US Army and served with the 84th Transport Company, stationed in Metz, France. He is a graduate of Community College of Rhode Island and of Northeastern University in Electronics Engineering Technology. He was employed as a Medical Diagnostic Imaging Field Engineer by Picker Corp, Marconi Medical and retired in 2006 from Philips Medical Systems. He is a member of the Kingston Congregational Church where he and Trudy were married in 1966. David was active in the Boy Scouts of America for nearly 50 years; joining as a Cub Scout, attaining the rank of Eagle Scout at Troop 82, Providence in 1958 and continuing as a leader in Narragansett Cub Pack 1, Webelos, and Troop 25, before founding Boy Scout Troop 2 in 1982 at St. Peter’s-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church in Narragansett. Most recently he served as Troop 2 advancement coordinator was instrumental in the expansion of Narragansett Scouting to include Co-ed Venture Crew 2, also at St Peter’s. In the mid-70’s he was a founding member of the South County Youth Soccer League serving as Director of Fields, referee and coach for many years. He was active serving community needs as a Red Cross Volunteer and a Narragansett Emergency Shelter Manager in the 80’s and early 90’s. A member of the Harbour Island Improvement Association since 1968, he served in every position and on the dock committee until his death. David leaves his wife of nearly 49 years Trudy (Nagle) McKendry, their four children David D. McKendry, his wife Eva and their two children Kyle and Gabriella of Rowley, MA; Steven D. McKendry, his wife Melissa and their children Lilja and Max of Virginia Beach, VA; Karen E. Antons and her daughter Kayli of Barrington, RI; and Lori L. Teaken, her husband Mark and their daughters Brigid, Shea, Rory and Lacey of Fayetteville, NY. He considered being “Dad” and “Poppa” the two greatest accomplishments of his life and his family the most important legacy he could ever leave. He is survived by twin brother Donald McKendry and his wife Judy of Maynard, MA; brother James McKendry and his wife Helen of Manchester ME; sisters Mary Walker and her husband James of New Braunfels, TX and Phyllis Parker of Steilacoom, WA; as well as 13 nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by brother-in-law Stanley R. Parker and son-in-law Stas Antons. Dave will be dearly missed by family, friends, neighbors and scouting colleagues whose lives he has touched through the years. A private interment will be held at the RI Veterans Cemetery. A service to celebrate his life will be held at the Harbour Island Beach, Sunday September 27, 2015 at 1 PM. The family requests that flowers be omitted.
