“Somewhere, something incredible is to be known.” ~ Carl Sagan David Albert Hurdis died at home in Narragansett on June 5, 2022. Born in Providence, RI on March 13, 1941 to Frank DeVoe Hurdis and his wife Beatrice Black Hurdis, he is pre-deceased, survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Carolyn S. Hurdis of Narragansett, and by his three children, Daniel, Andrew (Hilary), and Rebecca (Ziad). He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren: Nina (19), Vaughn (17), Elliott (16), Bella (15), and Clara (10). His brother Frank DeVoe Hurdis, Jr. of Indianapolis also survives him. David was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who was enjoyed, admired, and greatly loved. David is a graduate of the University of Rhode Island where he was a member of the Sigma Pi fraternity. He received a BS in Chemical Engineering (‘62) and MS in Chemical Engineering (‘64). He later received a PhD (’73) from the Catholic University of America in fluid mechanics. He was a dedicated scientist and researcher with broad interests and accomplishments. He worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center on the thermal design of spacecraft. From 1974 to 1977 he was assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Maryland. He subsequently worked at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (APL), the Office of Naval Research, the Naval Underwater Systems Center in New London, CT, and the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in Newport, RI. David also served as a scientific advisor with the Sixth Fleet in Naples, Italy and was presented the Navy Meritorious Civilian Service Award for his initiative and foresight. David maintained a lifelong love of astronomy. After retiring, he was extremely active with American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO). David had a great sense of wonder for the scientific and natural world and traveled extensively with Carolyn. He will forever be remembered for his wit, humor and devotion to friends, community, and family. Donations in David’s memory would be welcomed by the Unitarian-Universalist Congregation of S.
