Daniel O. Wheelan III, 81, of Narragansett, passed away on Saturday, April 4th, 2026.
Dan was born in South Kingstown on February 4, 1945, to Daniel and Janice (Peters) Wheelan. He was raised in Providence, Rhode Island and was a graduate of LaSalle Academy, Providence College and received a Master's in Social Work from Smith College. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era and worked for the states of MA and RI for a combined 40 years as a Social Worker.
Dan had a lifelong love of "futbol" and was a season ticket holder for the New England Revolution for 27 years. He raised and raced pigeons for most of his life. He also had an incredible memory and loved staying up late talking about local history, global affairs, family relations and connections!
Dan was predeceased by his beloved wife of 45 years Grace (MacLeod) Wheelan, his parents Daniel and Janice (Peters) Wheelan and his sister Susan Wheelan. Dan is survived by his brothers Chris Wheelan and George Wheelan, his sister Mary-Pat Wheelan (Strong Oak Lefebvre), sister-in-law Jane Winters, sons Sean Wheelan and Drew Wheelan (Christy Zendt), his grandchildren Andrew Wheelan, Eartha Wheelan and Phoebe Wheelan and many nieces and nephews.
Dan had an active and busy social life up until his end with trivia, dancing and card games with his dear friend Anita Krebill. He proudly beat her at High Low Jack two days before his passing. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to one of the many organizations that Dan supported including RINPR, the Arbor Day Foundation and the Nature Conservancy.
Visiting Hours will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, from 4-7PM in Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI 02879. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10AM in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefield, RI 02879, burial to follow in the Rhode Island Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail, Exeter, RI 02822.
