Courtney Lloyd Davis, 71, of Matunuck Point died Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at South County Hospital after a year-long battle with cancer. He was the long time companion of Jean Hutchinson. His parents were the late Charles and Emily (Lloyd) Davis of Cranston, Rhode Island. He graduated from Mount Hermon Academy, received a bachelor’s degree from Colby College and a masters degree from Boston University. He taught economics at Cranston High School and was guidance counselor at Killingly High School in Danielson, Connecticut. Music was an important part of his life and his unique tenor voice was a source of great joy to all who knew him. As a young man he sang with the Rhode Island Civic Chorale. He spent many years singing barbershop with the championship Narragansett Bay Chorus and in several quartets including the Pilgrim’s Pride and the Northeast Champion Grandstand Vocal Band. He was a founding member of the South County Chamber Singers. In later years he sang with Halcyon, a renaissance vocal ensemble in Stonington, Connecticut, and the local singing group Trust in Joy. He was a member of the Peace Dale Congregational Church Choir. An avid sailor, he spent his summers sailing the coast of Maine. He sailed the Atlantic coast from Canada to Florida and the Bahamas. He was a member of the Down East Yacht Club in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. He volunteered with the Friends of Fish and Wildlife at the Kettle Pond Visitor Center, and was a member of the Westerly Land Trust. He spent many hours walking the trails of Rhode Island. He enjoyed travel, photography and growing tomatoes. He is survived by a daughter, Holly Davis of Saunderstown, RI, and a brother, Richard Davis and his family of Suffield CT. A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, August 29, 2009 at the Peace Dale Congregational Church, 261 Columbia Street, South Kingstown. In lieu of flowers, donations in Courtney’s memory may be made to the charity of your choice.
