Cole James Spence

Cole James Spence, 32 of Portsmouth, RI unexpectedly passed away at home on Friday March 24th, 2023.


He was the fiancé of Ashli Renee DeArruda of Portsmouth, RI, the Son of John (Jack) E. Spence Jr. of Charlestown and Lisa Marie McCandless of Baltic, CT. Survived by his future mother and father in-law Tammi DeArruda and Edward F. DeArruda Jr. of Portsmouth, RI.


Cole graduated from Narragansett High School in 2009, and quickly launched into a career as a cook and eventually becoming a Chef at many well-known South County restaurants. While working at the Rathskeller in Charlestown, RI he realized his dream of one day opening his own restaurant.


Cole to some was rather intimidating but to those who knew him he was a gentle giant, he loved going to see Absence of Despair, Upon a Burning Body, Limp Bizkit and countless other bands in Concert. Cole loved Cuddling with his cats Charlie and Loki and testing his creativity with cooking with his soon to be Wife Ashli. Cole enjoyed playing Video games with his very close group of friends and would binge watch his favorite Anime Series. Cole was truly a big kid with a big heart, and he was loved by many people.


In addition to his fiancé and parents he is survived by his Grandparents, Dr. John E Spence and Mrs. Annie A Spence of Narragansett, aunts and uncles, Ms. Kathy Gardner of Reno Nevada and Mr. David Spence and his Wife Jessica and daughter, Lily of Charlestown, RI. Cousins Ian Gardner of Cranston, RI. Mrs. Hannah Jandreau, husband Kevin and Son Forrest of Gladstone, OR

Cole is also survived by his sister Mrs. Melanie Pendleton, her husband Stephen and their son and daughter, Orion & Persephone of Baltic, CT., a future brother and sister-in-law Edward F. DeArruda III and Danielle Shorey-Dearruda and their sons, Noah and Eddie of Portsmouth.


A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.


In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Potter League for Animals at 87 Oliphant Lane in Middletown, RI in Coles’ name.
