Christopher Shafer

Christopher Shafer, 74, of South Kingstown, passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2020 at home. Born in Binghampton, New York, he was the son of the late Richard Houston Shafer and Johanna Julia (Formanek) Shafer. Mr. Shafer was an environmental scientist for Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management for twenty seven years before retiring. He was a graduate of Clarkson University, Boston College, and received his Master’s Degree from Perdue University. Mr. Shafer was very athletic and enjoyed playing baseball, tennis, skiing, hiking, biking, and swimming. He was an esteemed member of the Appalachian Mountain Club Narragansett Chapter, where he participated in most of the activities offered by the club, but primarily trail maintenance throughout RI and beyond. He was the recipient of many awards including the Appie Award whcich is the highest award in the club. He leaves a sister Catherine Shafer of Binghampton, New York; his partner Maria Earley of South Kingstown and her daughter JeAnne Swinley. Services will private.
