Charles J. Read, 85, of Richmond, Rl, died at Phillip Hulitar Hospice in Providence on August 6, 2018 after valiantly fighting a year long cancer battle. He was the husband of the late Phillis C. (Reynolds) Read of Pawtucket. He is survived by his partner, Elaine M. Coleman of Attleboro, MA. Read was a newspaper journalist and sports editor in Ohio and New Jersey. He held positions on the Providence Journal Bulletin, the Providence Business News and the Westerly Sun. He was also a public relations practitioner before retirement. He is the author of a memoir "Round the Square," two novels and many short stories. A Korean War veteran, Read served four years in the navy as a writer and photographer. He studied English Literature and World History at the University of Connecticut, Class of 1961. For many years Read served on the Public Relations Advisory Committee of Meeting Street School and on the Board of the Cornerstone Adult Daycare Services. He was a charter member of the Southeastern New England chapter of the Public Relations Society of America and the president of the local International Association of Business Communicators. Read was born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in New London where he studied at the former Bulkeley High School. He was the son of the late Charles J. and Olive M. Read of Quaker Hill and brother of the late Barbarann Eckhart of Ledyard. Funeral services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.
