Catherine M. Greene (Malvey), 98, Peace Dale, died peacefully at home on June 3. Kay was the beloved wife of Robert F. Greene. Born in Portsmouth, to the late Patrick J. and Julia M. Malvey (McAuliffe). Kay was educated in the Newport public schools, graduated from the RI Hospital’s Training School for Nurses in 1944, then volunteered for service in the Army Nurse Corps where she served for ten years. Stationed in Japan at the time of the outbreak of the Korean War, she was deployed to the combat zone where she served for thirteen months. Leaving the service in 1955 Kay obtained her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the Catholic University of America. In 1967 she married Bob, a career naval officer and continued nursing. After retirement she devoted her life and energies to community services. Kay was designated South County Volunteer of the Year and her service was recognized by her inclusion in the book “Remarkable Rhode Islanders”. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by six siblings. She leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and their families. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 10am in St. Francis of Assisi Church, 114 High Street, Wakefied. Burial will follow in RI Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers donations in Kay’s name to your favorite charity would be appreciated.
