Carol A. Kiernan

May 24, 1941 — January 13, 2025

Carol A. Kiernan, 83, of South Kingstown, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 13, 2025 with her loving husband James by her side. Carol and Jim were married for 58 years, and together for 70 years. Carol was the daughter of the late George and Florence (Nemethy) Weston, and the stepdaughter of Robert Nelson.

Carol was born in Newark, NJ and grew up in Belleville, NJ. She met Jim at St. Peter’s School when they were 10 years old. Carol graduated first in her class from Mt. St. Dominic Academy (Class of 1959) and was proud that both of her daughters graduated from “The Mount” as well. Carol and Jim were high school sweethearts, until Jim stood her up for the prom! Somehow Carol’s mother encouraged her to ask “Jimmy Kiernan” to her college prom, and the rest is history. Carol was a proud graduate of Rutgers College of Pharmacy (Class of 1963). Carol graduated first in her class and was smart as a whip, one of only a handful of women to graduate from the program. Carol had a long career in retail pharmacy and she and Jim were proud to say that Carol broke through the glass ceiling to pursue her career.

Carol and Jim loved spending time at their favorite place, the Jersey Shore. They owned many beach houses, but 224 Sailfish Way was what the family called home and where Carol loved spoiling her grandchildren.

Carol and Jim built a home in Trinity, FL in 1997. This is where Carol played many rounds of golf at Fox Hollow, bowled, played mahjong, danced and enjoyed time with her large group of boisterous friends. Carol and Jim split their time between winters in Florida and summers at the Jersey Shore. In their retirement Carol and Jim traveled extensively and loved seeing the world.

Carol was a leader, whether that be at work, planning family vacations or organizing outings and trips for her and Jim’s large group of friends. Carol always had her hair done, lipstick on and nails painted. She loved to go to concerts and ride her bike to the beach at the Jersey Shore. She was a voracious reader, loved a good cup of tea and a sweet treat at the end of the day.

Carol loved being a grandma. She made elaborate Halloween costumes, always found the best present for birthdays and Christmas and was proud of the accomplishments of all of her grandchildren.

Jim was an unwavering, committed and compassionate caretaker for Carol for many years. They lived a wonderful life together and they ended each day by saying, “I love you, I love you more”.

Besides her husband, Carol is survived by her two daughters, Doreen Feeney (Chris) and Tara Kiernan Downey (Bob) and eight grandchildren, Katherine Feeney, Erin Feeney, Meaghan Feeney, Norah Feeney, Kyle Keech, Aidan Keech, Shannon McGarty and Logan Downey. She was the grandmother of the late Jake Downey.

Calling hours will be held Friday, January 17, 2025 from 9am-10am and a funeral home service will take place at 10am in the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. Burial will follow in Gates of Heaven Cemetery, East Providence.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association Rhode Island Chapter, 245 Waterman St #306, Providence, RI 02906.
