Carol C. Hazlehurst, 73, of North Kingstown, died at home Saturday, with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of Thomas E. Hazlehurst. Born in Wakefield, she was the daughter of the late James P. and Jane (Kenyon) Caffrey. As a young woman, Mrs. Hazlehurst toured Europe, waltzed at balls in the Vienna Opera House, and skied the Alps. As a woman, Mrs. Hazlehurst worked in newspapers and photography, and, as the owner of the former Kenyon’s Department Store in Wakefield, managed a retail store. Later in life, and with the assistance of the South County Writer’s Group, Mrs. Hazlehurst authored “Azimuth Point”, a paperback book intended for light summer reading. Mrs. Hazlehurst was a Colonial Dame, served as a Trustee for South County Hospital, and was a member of the Dunes Club in Narragansett. Besides her husband, she is survived by five children, Ingrid Holmberg and her husband Sean Pressman of Canada, Erik Holmberg and his wife Ronna Kress of California, Teodor “Tidge’ Holmberg of Long Island, New York, Nancy Hazlehurst Deutsch and her husband Clayton of Newport, Pam Thompson of Vermont; and a grandson, Samuel Holmberg of California. A private reception and time of remembrance for family and friends will be held at the Dunes Club, Narragansett. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her memory may be made to South County Hospital, 100 Kenyon Avenue, Wakefield, RI 02879.
