We regret to announce the passing of Byron W. Cahoone Jr., 69, of South Kingstown, on September 19th, 2022. Byron passed away peacefully at Miriam Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Byron was predeceased by his parents Byron W. Cahoone Sr. and Janet Cahoone. Byron is survived by his wife Elena, his sister Janice Cahoone Whaley of North Kingstown, his brother Wayne Cahoone of South Kingstown, and his brother James Cahoone of Westerly and several nieces and nephews.
Byron graduated from Chariho High School in 1971 during which time he became a volunteer firefighter, which led him to his 35+ year career as a firefighter for the Town of Narragansett. Byron excelled in his career, he was the department’s EMD coordinator, First Aid instructor, and had earned the top-ranking title of Captain at the time of his retirement in 2010. He was a mentor who was respected by the other firefighters within the Department. Byron was a protector at heart and truly enjoyed helping others any way he could.
From the time he was a young boy, Byron always had a fondness for dogs. He especially adored the Scottie breed, of which he had numerous over the years. One of his most notable Scotties was Tavish, who had been injured by a car, and needed the help of her “wheels” to get around.
One of Byron’s many, but most recent claims to fame, was his instrumental role in the establishment of the South Kingstown Dog Park. Byron helped raise funds for the improvements, and then continued to volunteer his time to make sure the park continued to thrive. It was likely that you would find Byron and his Scottie Tilly at the dog park on any given day. You simply couldn’t miss his jolly personality and infectious laugh.
Byron was a quintessential “swamp yankee” with a huge heart. He was known and adored by many in the community and will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
