Bruce H. Bateson

Bruce Harold Bateson, age 69 years, entered into eternal rest on August 15, 2023. There were many things that Bruce couldn’t do in this life. He couldn’t hear or speak, and he slowly lost the ability to walk; abilities we usually take for granted. However, we honor him today by remembering the many things he could do, teaching us what was truly important in life. Bruce had a gentle, sweet, and patient spirit; we always said he wouldn’t hurt a fly. He could trust, smile, laugh, and show love with a look, a gaze, or an expression. He had perseverance and strength in facing limitations and challenges; many that would crush the rest of us. He expected little from others, although, especially when he was younger, high points of a day would include eating, bathing in the sunshine, riding in the car, or receiving a facial massage. He inspired and taught his family to be patient, to love and support others, and to be strong in the face of limitations. His life inspired us to be grateful for the little joys in life, to be his voice, to speak up, to be patient, and to love without words. Although his was a simple life, this simplicity taught us what is truly important on earth. In giving to him and receiving his lessons, we grew to become better human beings. May he now find true freedom and peace without earthly limitations. Bruce, even without words, you taught us the most important of life’s lessons, and we thank you. Rest in peace sweet soul.

We also thank the many caregivers who supported Bruce with patience and kindness in various group homes and workshops over the years, and for those who provided care in illness. He is survived by his sisters, Alison Bateson-Toupin, Lisa Bateson-Toegemann, many nephews and nieces and his brothers.

Funeral and burial will be private. To honor Bruce, donations may be made to the Jonnycake Center for Hope, 22 Kersey Road, South Kingstown, 02879 in support of literacy programs for children in need.
