Br. Robert W. Hazard passed away on January 15, 2024 in Narragansett, Rhode Island.


Born on January 5, 1938 in Providence, RI, he was the son of the late Walter R. and Marian E (Whalen) Hazard. He is survived by his brother John and wife Harriet, sister Carolyn Hazard, and his sister in law, Susan, wife of his late brother Walter Hazard, as well as numerous loving nieces and nephews.


Br. Robert grew up in Rhode Island, a home that was dear to the Hazard family. He entered the Brothers of the Christian Schools after graduating from La Salle Academy in Providence. After, he went to Barrytown, NY, receiving the habit of the De La Salle Christian Brothers in September 1956. He then attended Catholic University and began his beloved career teaching social studies at St. Cecilia’s in Brooklyn from 1961 – 1965, where he later returned as principal.


A devoted educator, Br. Robert earned multiple degrees, attesting to his lifelong commitment to learning. His academic achievements included Masters Degree in education from the University of Birmingham as well as studies in Religious Education, Elementary School Administration, Theology, African Studies, and Lasallian Studies. Throughout his illustrious career, he held various roles that reflected his dedication to shaping young minds and fostering a love for knowledge. His assignments included teaching and the roles of assistant and principal at an array of schools such as La Salle Academy, Providence, La Salle Military Academy, New York, Oakdale, New York, Ocean Tides in Narragansett, Liceo La Salle, Collegio de La Salle, and Liceo La Salle in Guatemala .


Br. Robert's impact extended far beyond the borders of his native Rhode Island. His passion for education and cross-cultural understanding led him to travel the world, leaving an indelible mark on the communities he served. Among his most cherished experiences was his time as a principal and teacher in Guatemala, where he not only imparted knowledge but also embraced and celebrated the rich diversity of the region.


Known for his warm and welcoming demeanor, Br. Robert had a remarkable ability to make friends wherever his journey took him. His infectious spirit and genuine interest in others endeared him to countless individuals across the globe. As a Christian Brother, he was actively involved in numerous ministries throughout his life, embodying the principles of love, compassion, and service.


He spent his retirement at La Salle, Providence from 2011- 2019, and then moved to Christian Brothers, Narragansett until his death.

Br. Robert W. Hazard, FSC, will be remembered not only for his academic proficiency but also for his unwavering commitment to fostering a sense of community and understanding in the world. His legacy lives on through the countless lives he touched and the lessons he imparted during his remarkable journey.


Visitation will be held Friday, January 19, from 3:30 pm to 7:30 pm at The Chapel of Our Lady of the Star, Christian Brothers Center, 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett, RI. There will be a Prayer Service and sharing of memories at 5 pm during the visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 20, at 10:30 am at The Chapel of Our Lady of the Star. Burial will take place at Christian Brothers Cemetery following Mass.


In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to La Salle Educational Center, Homestead, Florida. Please mail donations in care of Christian Brothers Center, 635 Ocean Road, Narragansett, RI 02882.
