Brother Austin David Carroll, FSC, formerly of Brooklyn, NY, died on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at De La Salle Hall in Lincroft, NJ. Born in New York City on November 22, 1935, he attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School in Brooklyn before entering the De La Salle Christian Brothers in 1953. He received a bachelor’s degree from The Catholic University of America, a master’s degree from Brown University, and a doctorate from New York University.
A long-time educator, Brother David began his career as a secondary school teacher at De La Salle Academy in Newport, RI, and Mater Christi Diocesan High School in Astoria, NY. He was an adjunct professor at numerous tertiary institutions including Saint John’s University and New York University in New York City and Saint Thomas Aquinas College in Sparkhill, NY, where he also served as chair of the board of trustees. He was at different times in his career director for Advanced Technological Instruction Systems for the Diocese of Brooklyn, founder of the Data Systems Center of the Archdiocese of New York, vice president for finance of the Long Island New England Province of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, and chair of the board of directors of Christian Brothers Investment Services.
He was also undersecretary general of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association, a papal agency for humanitarian and pastoral support that is based in Manhattan, an advisor to the Holy See Permanent Observer Mission to the United Nations for Middle East issues, director of research for the Military Archdiocese of the United States’ Pope John Paul II Center of Prayer and Study of Peace, a Knight Grand Cross of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, and a recipient of the Papal Honor, The Cross Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.
Brother David was predeceased by his father and mother, Hugh and Gertrude Carroll nee Jordan and by his two sisters, Gertrude Nicholas and Rita Fitzgibbon and by his two brothers, Hugh Carroll and James Carroll, and also by three nephews, David Carroll and Gerald (Jerry) and Maurice (Eddie) Fitzgibbon. He is survived by nine nephews, Hugh, Noel and Patrick Carroll; James and Kevin Carroll; Mark, Brian, Gregory, and Matthew Fitzgibbon and by one niece, Mary Kenny. Also surviving are many great nieces and nephews and many great-great nieces and nephews and one great-great-great niece, Lani.
Calling hours for Brother David will be from 3:00 to 5:00 PM on Friday, September 27, 2024 at Christian Brothers Center, 635 Ocean Road in Narragansett, RI. There will be a Prayer Service at 4:30 pm during the visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of the Star Chapel, Christian Brothers Center, on Saturday, September 28, 2024, at 10:30 AM. Burial will take place at Christian Brothers Cemetery following Mass.
