Betty H. Tucker, 100, of South Kingstown, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Sunday, June 1, 2025. Born in Cranston, she was the daughter of the late George and Charlotte (Peckham) Helliwell. Betty was the beloved wife of the late Maurice T. Tucker.
Betty graduated from North Kingstown High School. She was a homemaker and helped with the family’s potato farm. She had many creative hobbies throughout her life, including hooking wool rugs, braided rugs, embroidering, cross-stitching, ceramics, refinishing furniture, loom weaving, basket weaving, canning, cake decorating, and more. Betty is most well known as an award-winning quilter and member of Ninigret Quilters and the Narragansett Bay Quilters’ Association. She was a long-time member of the Exeter and Perryville Granges and was a founding member of the Perryville Grange’s candy booth at the Washington County Fair. Betty was also a founding member of the Tuesday Braiders, now known as the Tuesday Sewing Group. Together with her husband, Maurice, Betty had traveled all over the world by ship, plane, train, car, and motorhome. She loved baking desserts and is well known for her raisin squares, apple pie, and johnnycakes.
Betty will be sadly missed by her sons, Robert M. Tucker and Richard H. Tucker (Laurie); and daughters, Cynthia Kiernan Tarasenko (Alan) and Betsy T. Barbera (Peter). Grandchildren: Kristin Souza (Mike), Jennifer J. Tucker (Chris), Steven J. Barbera, Gregory T. Kiernan (Jenny), Vanessa A. Egan (Jon), Joshua T. Kiernan (Layla), Benjamin P. Barbera (Sophie); and 11 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. at Avery-Storti Funeral Home. Burial will follow at New Fernwood Cemetery in West Kingston.
