Betty (O’Donnell) Kane, beloved wife of 62 Years of the late Austin P. Kane, died on November 18 after a long illness. Born in Providence on October 4, 1928 to the late Howard J. and Isabel (Reynolds) O’Donnell, Betty attended St. Mary’s School-Broadway. Betty graduated from Rhode Island State College (URI) in 1950. While there she was President of Women’s Student government, and was active in the Drama Club. After graduation Betty taught for a short time in Warwick, married and raised five children. When all the children were school age Betty returned to school to obtain her Master’s Degree from RIC. She then went back to teaching in Providence until her retirement in 1990. An avid golfer, Betty was a long-time member of the Point Judith Country Club in Narragansett and the Golden Gate Country Club in Naples, Florida. She loved the beach and belonged to the Canonchet Beach Club most of her adult life. Five children survive Betty: Colleen Kane, Ashaway, RI; Michael H. (Rita) Kane, Wausau, Wisconsin; Beth (Fred) Lantz, Marietta Georgia; Kevin A. (Nina) Kane, West Warwick, RI; and Maureen Kane, North Providence RI. She is also survived by her three sisters: Anne McCarthy, North Kingstown; Isabel (Carmine) Rao, Providence RI; and Kathleen (Ralph) Dykstra, Richmond, RI. She was predeceased by her brothers Ted and Walter O’Donnell. Surviving grandchildren are: Colin, Mackenzie, and Brennan Lantz; Kristin Kane and Kaitlin (Casey) Stankowski. She leaves several nieces and nephews as well. Betty was the niece of the late Honorable Walter H. Reynolds, former Mayor of Providence who resided with the Kane family for 22 years. Visiting hours will take place at Avery Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia St., Wakefield, Friday, November 25, 2016, from 4-7PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, November 26, 2016 at 9:00 AM at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, 864 Point Judith Road, Narragansett. Burial will follow in the Rhode Island Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail (Route 2), Exeter,. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Parkinson Research Foundation, 5969 Cattleridge Rd., Sarasota, FL 34232.
