Bertha Schurman

Bertha (Goldenfarb)Schurman, 91, of Kingston, died May 10, 2010 at the Scallop Shell Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by her family. Born June 25, 1918, she was a daughter of the late Aaron and Genia Goldenfarb, and was married to the late Bernard Schurman for 67 years. Mrs. Schurman earned her B.A. from Hunter City College, NYC, and received her Master’s of Library Science from URI. For many years, Mrs. Schurman was a librarian at the Prout School. She was an avid reader who loved music, Scrabble, crossword puzzles and people. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the arts and social causes and had a wonderful sense of humor. Her greatest gift was her ability to relate to other people and develop many deep and meaningful friendships. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, and loved her family. She was adored by her family and will be greatly missed. Mrs. Schurman is survived by her son, Josh and wife Kate of Newport; her son Paul and wife Barbara of Wakefield; and daughter, Rachel and husband Michael of Minneapolis; and grandchildren, Aaron, Julia, Nadia and Eli. She was the sister of the late Charles Goldenfarb and Lottie Sheib. A memorial service is planned for the summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union, 128 Dorrance Street, Providence, RI 02903 or the Courthouse Center for the Arts, PO Box 186, West Kingston, RI 02892.
