Benjamin Dean Sumner

May 11, 1964 — January 20, 2020

Benjamin Dean Sumner, 55, of South Kingstown, passed away Monday, January 20th. Born in Providence, he was a son of Margaret (Funk) Annand of Exeter and the late Benjamin E. Sumner. Ben was a lifelong Commercial Fisherman out of Pt. Judith, and was Captain on many boats. He had a great joy for cooking and was adamant that his "chowda" was the best on the planet. In more recent years, he enjoyed woodworking and restoring furniture. He was known for his sense of humor and always being able to make people laugh. He had the biggest heart, loved deeply and was loved deeply. Through all the trials and tribulations of his life, he maintained his sense of humor and a heart the size of Texas. Besides his mother, he is survived by three children, Courtney Popovschi and her husband Oleg, Carley Sumner, and Logan Latham; as well as Julia Burns, James Burns, and Jake Burns all of South Kingstown; two sisters, Jacqueline Carpenter and her husband Victor of Charlestown and Jane Lacen and her husband Homar of Englewood, FL; and a brother Paul Sumner of North Kingstown. He loved being Uncle Ben to many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at 11 am Tuesday, January 28th at the Avery-Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield. Burial will follow in New Fernwood Cemetery, Kingston Visiting hours are Monday, 4-7 pm. The family kindly requests that donations in his name be made to the Pt. Judith Fishermen's Scholarship Foundation, PO Box 386, Narragansett, RI 02882.
