Barbara Hodnett, 82, a longtime Matunuck resident, died Friday. Mrs. Hodnett, a Providence native, was the beloved wife of the late Robert Hodnett for 41 years. She was the daughter of the late David and Catherine (Corrigan) Major. After graduating from Classical High School and Rhode Island College, Barbara spent 23 years as a second grade teacher at the Webster Avenue School in Providence. She retired in 1987. An avid traveler, her hobbies included oil painting, reading and studying classical languages. Her career instilled in her an appreciation for education and a love for learning. She studied Spanish at the University of Rhode Island after her retirement. Mrs. Hodnett traveled to many parts of the world, but reserved a deep appreciation and love for the natural beauty of southern Rhode Island. She spent summer days relaxing on nearby Matunuck Beach, swimming in the ocean and beachcombing along the shoreline. The Hodnett family would like to thank the staff at South Bay Manor in South Kingstown for all the care and compassion shown to Barbara in the past few years. She is survived by two children, Catherine Wilson of Matunuck and John Hodnett of Narragansett; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson. Also three nephews: Terrence, Noel and Dr. Brian Simpson. Funeral services are private. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Home & Hospice Care of RI, 1085 North Main Street, Providence RI 02904 or the Alzheimer’s Association, 245 Waterman Street, Suite 306, Providence, RI 02906.
