Austin Patrick Kane

May 14, 1926 — August 22, 2014

Austin P. Kane, beloved husband of Betty (O'Donnell) Kane, died August 22 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Belfast, Ireland to Joseph P. Kane and Catherine (Devlin) Kane on May 14, 1926, Austin emigrated to Rhode Island with his family at age four. He attended Tyler school in Providence. He graduated from Aldrich High School in Warwick, where he was President of his class for four years. Austin, an outstanding athlete, lettered in football, baseball, and basketball where he was honored as the Rhode Island state runner up scoring champ in 1943. After high school, Austin enlisted in the US Navy during World War II, serving in Australia, New Guinea, and the invasion of the Philippines. After the war, Austin attended the University of Rhode Island. He retired in Narragansett after a long career with (NYNEX) New England Telephone Company. An avid golfer, Austin was a former long-time member of the Point Judith Country Club where he was part of the Saturday Morning Golf Group. He sang with the Narragansett Bay Chorus for many years, and, while touring with them in England, made the first of many trips back to Ireland where his large family resides. Besides his wife of sixty-two years, Austin is survived by his children; Colleen Kane-Singer of Ashaway, Michael H. (Rita) Kane, of Wausau, Wisconsin, Beth Kane (Fred) Lantz of Atlanta, Kevin A. (Nina) Kane of West Warwick, and Maureen D. Kane of North Providence; his brother Patrick J. Kane of Narragansett, and many nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Ireland. His grandchildren Colin, Mackenzie and Brennan Lantz, and Kristin and Kaitlin Kane also survive him. Calling hours will be held at the Avery Storti Funeral Home, 88 Columbia Street, Wakefield, on Friday August 29, 2014 from 4-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, 864 Pt. Judith Road, Narragansett at 9 AM on Saturday August 30, 2014. Interment with military honors will follow in the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 301 South County Trail (Route 2), Exeter. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 146 Clifford Street, Providence, RI 02903.
